Popeyes Style Chicken Sandwich: Easy Homemade Recipe

Ingredients

  • Chicken:
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or boneless skinless chicken thighs (I used)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce (optional)
  • Breading:
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp Down.RightDelicious Sweet & Zesty Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp onion powder (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Frying:
  • Bacon Up Bacon Grease (enough for frying)
  • Sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Assembly:
  • Brioche buns
  • Dill pickle slices
  • Sauce

Instructions

  • WASH YOUR DAMN HANDS!
  • 👏🧼🫧
  • Marinate the chicken Add chicken to a bowl with Drew's Dust Sweet and Zesty, buttermilk and hot sauce
  • Let it soak for at least 1 hour (overnight = 🔥)
  • Make the sauce Mix mayo, cumin, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, red wine vinegar, salt, and pepper
  • Chill in the fridge
  • Prep the dredge In a bowl, combine flour, Down.RightDelicious Sweet & Zesty Seasoning or, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper
  • Bread the chicken Remove chicken from marinade, let excess drip off, then press firmly into the seasoned flour
  • 👉 Pro tip: Double dredge for that Popeyes-style crunch
  • Heat the bacon grease In a cast iron skillet or fryer, heat Bacon Up Bacon Grease to 350°F
  • Fry to golden perfection Carefully drop in chicken and fry for 5–7 minutes per side until golden brown and internal temp hits 165°F
  • Toast the buns Lightly toast brioche buns in a pan or on the grill
  • Build the sandwich Bottom bun Crispy chicken Generous spread of homemade sauce Pickles Top bun
