And let’s not forget about the versatility! You can tweak the spices or add your favorite ingredients to the queso. It’s a dish that invites creativity, so you can make it uniquely yours.

Ingredients & Tools You’ll Need

Alright, let’s talk about what you’ll need to bring this beauty to life. First off, you need two large thin-cut chuck steaks. They’re perfect for frying up crispy without taking forever.

Then, we’re going to fry them in some good ol’ bacon grease – trust me, it adds an incredible flavor.

As for the queso, you’ll need a blend of shredded cheddar and pepper jack for that ultimate cheesy goodness. I go heavy on the cheese here because who doesn’t love a good cheese pull? We’re also using some chunky Rotel for a bit of kick, and a few spices to really amp up the flavor.

Don’t forget the buttermilk for that perfect tenderizing effect on the steak.

How To Make It

Now that we’re all prepped and ready, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of making this delicious dish. It’s all about the right steps and timing, so hang tight!

A man in a light green shirt and cap is placing breaded pieces of chicken into a cast iron skillet with oil on a stovetop in a wood-paneled kitchen.

Preparation

First things first, let’s pound those chuck steaks thin. This is where you want to get a bit of aggression out – just make sure you don’t go too crazy! Once they’re nice and thin, set them aside.

Next, grab a bowl and whisk together your eggs, milk, and hot sauce. This mix will serve as your egg wash. In another bowl, mix your flour with the all-purpose seasoning and paprika.

You’ll want everything ready to go because the coating is key to that crispy exterior we’re after.

Finally, heat up your tub of bacon grease in a heavy skillet. You’re aiming for around 350°F, so keep an eye on it. That sizzle when the steak hits the pan is pure magic!

Cooking

Now it’s time to bring it all together! Take each steak and dip it first into the flour mixture, then into the egg wash, and back into the flour. This double-dipping method is what gives you that crunchy crust that everyone loves.

Once your grease is hot and ready, carefully place the coated steaks in the pan. Fry them for about 4-5 minutes per side or until they’re golden brown and delicious. You’ll know they’re done when they look irresistible and smell heavenly!

A man wearing glasses and a cap is in a kitchen, using a meat mallet to tenderize steak on a wooden cutting board. The steak is inside a plastic bag, and he is pressing down firmly.

While the steaks are frying, let’s tackle the queso. In a separate pot, melt 2 tablespoons of bacon grease, then whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour for about a minute. Slowly add in your milk, stirring constantly until it begins to simmer.

Then add the shredded cheese, Rotel, and Mexican seasoning. Keep stirring until everything is melted and smooth – this is the part where the cheese just pulls apart beautifully.

Serving & Variations

Once everything’s cooked and ready, it’s time to dig in! Serve your crispy country fried steak on a plate, and generously drizzle that luscious queso all over the top. I like to add a few extra toppings like sliced jalapeños or fresh cilantro for a little freshness and crunch.

A man in glasses and a hat holds a pair of tongs with a large piece of fried steak over a tray with a wire rack, standing in a kitchen with wooden cabinets.

Don’t be afraid to get creative here! You can serve this dish with a side of mashed potatoes, coleslaw, or even over some fluffy rice – it’s all about what you love. And if you have leftovers (which is rare because they disappear faster than a cold beer in July), you can store them in the fridge and reheat for a quick meal later on.

Wrapping Up

And there you have it – a comforting, hearty dish that’s sure to satisfy any craving. This Country Fried Steak & Queso is perfect for those nights when you just want something delicious and filling. So, gather your friends or family around the table, and enjoy every cheesy bite together.
