If you’re looking to elevate your backyard BBQ game, then smoked hamburger steaks are where it’s at. Imagine juicy patties, perfectly seasoned and kissed by the smoke, paired with buttery sautéed veggies and a savory gravy. Trust me, these bad boys are gonna be the star of your next cookout.

What I love about this recipe is how simple it is while still delivering big flavors. You can throw these together for a casual family dinner or impress your friends at a weekend gathering. Plus, the combination of the smoky beef and the rich, buttery gravy makes for a meal that everyone will be raving about for days.

Alright, let’s dive into what you’ll need for this flavor-packed feast. You’ll want to gather some good-quality ground beef, bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms. And don’t forget the secret weapons: Killer Hogs steak seasoning and some Texas seasoning.

With these ingredients, we’re gonna create something that’ll have your taste buds doing a happy dance.

Ingredients & Tools You’ll Need

First up, let’s talk about ground beef. I usually go for an 80/20 blend because that fat content gives you the juiciest results. You’ll also need some fresh green bell peppers and white onions, which add sweetness and crunch when cooked.

A person sprinkles seasoning onto six raw ground beef patties arranged on a foil-lined baking tray on a kitchen counter.

Sliced mushrooms bring an earthy flavor that complements the beef beautifully.

Now, seasoning is key here. I use a combo of Killer Hogs steak seasoning and Killer Hogs Texas seasoning to really amp up the flavor. And to take it over the top, we’ll need butter and brown gravy mix.

You can definitely go homemade with the gravy if you’re feeling ambitious, but I’m all about keeping it simple. Oh, and a good skillet or grill is essential for cooking these steaks to perfection.

How To Make It

Alright, let’s get this party started! First things first, we need to prep our veggies. You’ll want to slice up those onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers.

Once they’re all chopped, toss them into a pan with a couple of sticks of butter and a sprinkle of that Texas seasoning. From there, you can smoke or bake them at 275 degrees for about 45 minutes.

Six raw burger patties and a foil tray filled with sliced onions, green peppers, and mushrooms are cooking on a Traeger grill outside, with a brick wall visible in the background.

Now, while those veggies are getting all delicious, grab your ground beef. In a big mixing bowl, combine it with some Texas seasoning and a couple of tablespoons of mayo. This might sound a bit odd, but trust me, it helps keep the burgers super moist.

Pat that mixture into six large patties and sprinkle some more seasoning on both sides. Let those chill in the fridge until the veggies are done.

Cooking

Once your 45 minutes are up and those veggies are looking and smelling amazing, it’s time to get the steaks on the grill. Smoke those patties for about 30 minutes. You’ll want to keep an eye on them, as they should develop a beautiful crust on the outside while remaining juicy on the inside.

After that 30 minutes, toss those steaks into the pan with the sautéed veggies and add eight cups of water for the gravy. You can make it from scratch if you want, but I usually just follow the package directions for the mix. Let it simmer for another 30 minutes.

You’ll know it’s ready when the gravy thickens up and those flavors meld together into a savory sauce that’s just begging to be poured over the steaks.

Serving & Variations

Now for the fun part-serving! These smoked hamburger steaks are perfect with a side of mashed potatoes or even some buttery bread to soak up that glorious gravy. You can also get creative and serve them on a bun with your favorite toppings for a fun twist.

A person in a gray shirt adds a spoonful of mayonnaise from a jar to a bowl containing raw ground beef and more mayonnaise on a kitchen counter.

A common consensus among home cooks is: adding some cheese on top of the patties during the last few minutes of cooking can really take it to the next level. You could even throw in some crispy fried onions for texture. Plus, if you have leftovers, these make for a great next-day meal-just reheat and enjoy!
