Ingredients & Tools You'll Need

Alright, let’s talk about what you’ll need to make these beauties happen. First up, you’re going to need six large yellow onions. They’re the stars of the show, so pick some that are nice and firm.

Next, grab five sticks of salted butter – yes, five! We want those onions to be rich and buttery, and trust me, it makes all the difference.

For seasoning, I went with John Lindsey’s garlic butter, but don’t be shy about using your favorite blend. And of course, we can't forget the star ingredient: a jar of bacon jam. I used Midwest Fresh, and it was pure magic on these onions.

You’ll also want a greased baking dish – I recommend a cast iron pan, as it holds the heat beautifully.

How To Make It

Now that we’ve got our ingredients ready, let’s dive into the cooking process. It’s pretty straightforward, but there’s a bit of prep involved to get those onions ready for the grill. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be whipping these up like a pro!

A cluster of whole garlic bulbs is being smoked on a grill with the lid open, releasing steam. A person’s hand is holding a piece of foil nearby. The grill is outside next to a brick wall.

Preparation

First things first, light up that grill and get it to a steady 300 degrees. You’ll want to set it up for indirect cooking, so make sure you’ve got a good space for the onions to sit away from the direct heat. Then, grab your onions and cut one end off each one – this is going to help them bloom later.

Next, you’ll want to carefully cut each onion into eight wedges, but only go about three-quarters of the way down. This way, they’ll hold together while still opening up beautifully. Place them in your greased baking dish, and don’t forget to season those layers well!

Cut your butter into pats and place two on each onion, then cover the dish with foil. Now we’re ready to let them cook!

Cooking

Here’s where the magic happens. Pop those covered onions into the oven or smoker for about 45 minutes. You’ll want to keep an eye on them as they soften and start to release that incredible aroma.

After the first 45 minutes, remove the foil and generously top each onion with bacon jam – I divided the jar among the six onions, and let me tell you, it was worth it.

Now, return them to the heat for another 20 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when they’re tender and the bacon jam is all melted and bubbly. The smell wafting through the air is going to make everyone in the vicinity pretty jealous.

Once they’re cooked, let them cool for a minute before serving – you want to let those flavors settle a bit.

Serving & Variations

When it comes to serving these Bacon Jam Blooming Onions, the options are endless. They make a fantastic side dish paired with burgers or grilled chicken. You could even serve them as a stand-alone appetizer with toothpicks – just watch them disappear!

Feeling adventurous? Try different toppings like shredded cheese, chives, or even a drizzle of barbecue sauce for a twist. You can also adjust the seasoning based on your preferences.

If you want a little heat, sprinkle some red pepper flakes on top before grilling. And if you have leftovers (which is rare), they keep well in the fridge for a couple of days. Just reheat them in the oven to bring back that deliciousness.

Wrapping Up

So there you have it – a simple yet impressive way to enjoy onions like never before. Whether you’re grilling up a storm or just looking for a fun side dish for your next gathering, these Bacon Jam Blooming Onions are sure to steal the show. Trust me, once you make these, you’ll be dreaming up new ways to use bacon jam in your cooking.
